IRR features Tasmanian Tiger IRR-series was made with the mindset that an opponent might not be just a robber wearing a pantyhose over their head but an operator peering at you with state-of-the-art night vision equipment. The materials are compliant with the official standard of German Bundeswehr. The numbers given regarding reflectivity are as follows: IRR 650 – 1250 nm / 10 – 42%. In layman’s terms, within the wavelength range of 650 – 1250 nanometers the accepted reflectivity is 10 – 42%. Take note that even if as much as 42% reflectivity in longer wavelengths seems a lot, the purpose of IRR is not to make the user a completely non-reflective blob but to make them as reflective as things found in nature! What about the Finnish Defence Forces’ specs? The Finnish Defence Forces specifies IRR values in a slightly different way and per color, so straight comparisons aren’t feasible. However, here are a few range guidelines for different colors: for charcoal within the wavelength range of 750 – 1250 nanometers the reflectivity must be between 4 – 16%. For light green in the same wavelengths the range of reflectivity must be 40 – 60% in lower values and 42 – 57% in upper values. So, in the same ballpark even if the colors and values don’t match up perfectly! Pro-tip: The IRR compatibility of your non-IRR carry gear improves the more you cover it with IRR-compatible pouches, even if it won’t reach the higher tiers of protection.
