Description Vanilla planifolia, known as Vanilla, is a climbing orchid native to Mexico and Central America. The Vanilla planifolia plant produces the commonly known and used true vanilla pods that are used in everything from ice-cream and desserts to cosmetics and aromatic products. The Vanilla orchid can be fussy to grow but once the right position this plant will produce an abundant of vanilla pods. Common Name. Flat-leaved Vanilla; Tahitian Vanilla. Specifications. Rootless Cutting -Approx. 20cm Length (4 Nodes guaranteed) Or Rooted Plant in 50mm Pot Ideal Growing Conditions. Ideally grown on trees (or imitation of in greenhouses) to allow the plant to attach itself to the bark with an aerial rooting system. Prefers a humid climate, ensuring aerial roots are kept moist. Frost tender. Lightly water the soil before planting. Plant the Cutting – Bury 1-2 nodes in the soil while keeping at least 2 nodes above ground. Provide Support – Tie the vine loosely to a moss pole or trellis. Mist the Cutting – Lightly mist the leaves and aerial roots daily. Soil: You need a high quality potting mix, not a pre-bagged product such as you find at Bunnings etc, try a landscaping place. However, as I am not local to you I still can’t say if they have good quality or not. You are looking for well composted pine bark and large particles. This ensures air flow to the roots and good drainage. When time to re-pot, select a pot one size up ONLY and ensure it has many holes for good drainage.
